In Greek mythology, the owl (Athene noctua) was associated with Athena, the greek goddess of wisdom, handicraft, warfare, patron and protectress of the city of Athens. In the Ancient Greek art the goddess is usually portrayed holding an owl on her hand or with her shield which is often decorated with an owl.
Hence, as a result of such an association the owl, also known as the owl of Athena or the owl of Minerva, is worldwidely considered as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, perspicacity and erudition.
