Pythagoras porcelain cup with Evil Eye

Handmade  pythagorean porcelain cup decorated with the Evil Eye, a symbol of protection

Handmade porcelain pythagorean cup decorated with the Evil Eye, a symbol of protection.

According to tradition, Pythagoras, a greek philosopher and mathematician who lived in Samos in the 5th B.C., created the Greedy Cup, also known as Pythagorean cup, in order to teach the citizens of Samos the virtue of moderation, equality and justice. While using the cup, one has to make sure that the cup is not filled over the limit, which is inscribed on the inside of the cup, otherwise, its entire content will be spilled.

This Pythagorean cup (or Cup of Justice, Tantalus cup or ''i koupa tis dikaiosynis'') is decoraded with the evil eye, a protection symbol, also known as “mati”.
In Greek culture the evil eye is a curse thought to be given by a malicious glare that can cause bad luck or loss. The myth of the evil eye is predicated on the fact that others could be envious of your life. So the idea that too much fortune, frame, or praise can bring lots of attention to yourself (and thus, many eyes) means that you're more likely to catch the gaze of someone knowingly (or unknowingly) giving you the evil eye. So in order to bestow the curse one has to wear or carrie an amulet, that usually takes the form of a blue eye because traditionally, in the Aegean Region, the light-colored eyes, such as green eyes and especially blue eyes, which are relatively rare in this area, are thought to bestow the curse. The evil eye brings good luck and protects you from any ill-will that could otherwise have a negative effect on your well-being or your life in general.

The cup is suitable for use (containg wine, water etc.)
