Small plaster table clock with Caryatids (Karyatides)

Handmade small plaster table clock with Caryatids (Karyatides)

Handmade plaster table clock, decorated with Caryatids (Karyatides). A fantastic souvenir from Greece!

Caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. In the Ancient Greek language the term karyatides literally means maidens of Karyai, an ancient town on the Peloponnese.

The most renowned and most-copied examples are those of the six figures of the Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion, the ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece, which was built between 421 and 406 BC and designed by the Greek architect Mnesicles. The temple was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.

The original five of those six figures, which are replaced onsite by replicas, are now on permanent display at the Acropolis Museum on a special balcony that allows visitors to view them from all sides. The sixth figure was removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century and is now in the British Museum in London.

The clock is powered by a watch battery (button cell).

Excellent greek gifts.
