Archaic black-figure amphora with Hermes, Athena, Hector and Andromache

Handmade archaic black-figure amphora with Hermes, Athena, Hector and Andromache

Handmade archaic black-figure amphora with Hermes, Athena, Hector and his wife, Andromache. A lovely souvenir from Greece!

The amphora depicts a famous scene of Homer’s epic poem Iliad in which the Olympian gods who had sided with the Trojans, such as Apollon and his sister Artemis, wanted Hermes to go steal Hector's body so it can have a proper funeral. However, Hera, Poseidon, and Athena disagreed. In the meantime, Apollo protected the body from damage while Achilles was dragging it around in dishonor.

Zeus decreed that no one will steal the body; instead, King Priam would have to approach Achilles and pay him a ransom in order to recover it. Zeus ordered Hermes to guide Priam through the Argive camps and make him invisible or disguise him so that no one will recognize and attack him. When they reach the Argive camp, Hermes used his wand to put all the sentries (watchmen) to sleep and opened the gates for Priam. As they approach Achilles' lodge, Hermes opened the gate, revealed his identity to Priam and instructed him to appeal to Achilles' emotions and beg him to return Hector's body.

The reverse shows two young jockeys in high gallop in the heat of the race. Both boys are dressed in a short chiton and ride without saddles or stirrups, guiding the horse with their reins. They use a whip in order to gain some ground. The prominence of the horse and rider, captured at a decisive moment in the race, may signal the contest's victor.
