Archaic black-figure hydria with Maenads

Hand-painted archaic black-figure hydria with Maenads, Dionysus's followers

Hand-painted archaic black-figure hydria depicting Maenads, the female followers of Dionysus, god of the wine and theatre. An ideal souvenir from Greece!

In Ancient Greek Mythology the Maenads are the female followers of Dionysus, the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, orchards and fruit, vegetation, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. The Maenads along with the Satyrs are considered as the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name literally translates as raving ones.

The Maenads were often portrayed as inspired by Dionysus into a state of ecstatic frenzy through a combination of dancing and intoxication. In ancient ceramic art, the frolicking of Maenads and Dionysus is often a theme depicted on kraters, used to mix water and wine, or on hydria, a type of water-carrying vessel.
