A lovely souvenir from Greece!

Τhe Geometric style first appears in Athens at the beginning of the 9th century. The most prominent decorative patterns of the Geometric style are almost exclusively linear, such as dots and lines formed into angles, squares, triangles, lozenges, oblique strokes. Battlements, zigzags, meanders patterns and animals, such as horses and owls, are also commonly depicted.

The pyxis is a shape of vessel from the classical world, usually a cylindrical box with a separate lid. Originally mostly used by women to hold cosmetics, trinkets or jewellery, surviving pyxides were mostly made of clay but in later periods they were made also of wood, metal, ivory, or other materials. The name derived from Corinthian boxes made of wood from the tree puksos (boxwood), that also came with covers. The shape of the vessel can be traced in pottery back to the Protogeometric period in Athens.

This particular pyxis was found in Boeotia, a region of central Greece and a city of great significance during the classical period. The original 8th century BC pyxis is currently on permanent display at the Museum of Cycladic Art, in Athens.
