Hercules is a Roman hero and god, son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his strength, courage, ingenuity, and sexual prowess with both males and females and for his numerous adventures, of which the most renowned were the Twelve Labours.
The first of these labours and the most famous was to slay the Nemean lion, a vicious monster that lived at Nemea, in Peloponnese. This monster could not be killed with mortals' weapons because its golden fur was impervious to attack. Its claws were sharper than mortals' swords and could cut through any armor. Hercules eventually killed the monster by strangling it with his bare hands.
A Muse (Mousa) is depicted on the back side of the crater. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses are the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. The Muses were nine and considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, lyric songs, and myths that were related orally for centuries in ancient Greek culture.
