Greek ceramic plate depicting Zeus and Ganymede

Handmade greek ceramic plate depicting Zeus and Ganymede

Handmade greek ceramic plate depicting Zeus and Ganymede. A lovely souvenir from Greece!

The plate depicts Zeus and his lover, Ganymede. Ganymede was a divine hero whose homeland was Troy. Homer in his epic poem Iliad describes Ganymede as the most beautiful of mortals.

According to the Greek Mythology, Zeus, the king of all Gods, fell in love with Ganymede’s beauty and abducted him from Mount Ida near Troy in Phrygia in the form of an eagle. On Olympus, Zeus had him granted eternal youth and immortality and the office of cupbearer to the gods. The myth was a model for the Greek social custom of paiderastía, the romantic relationship between an adult male and an adolescent male. It was characteristic of the Archaic and Classical periods and it was associated with entrance into military life and the religion of Zeus.

In 5th century Athens, the story of Ganymede became popular among vase-painters, which was suited to the all-male symposium. Ganymede is usually portrayed as a muscular young man.
