Artemis, also known as Diana, was one of the Olympian deities in the Ancient Greek religion and mythology. She was the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon and chastity. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the patron and protector of young girls, and was believed to bring disease upon women and relieve them of it. Much like Athena and Hestia, Artemis preferred to remain a maiden and is sworn never to marry.
This statue is a replica of the original roman marble sculpture found in Italy, better known as Diana of Versailles. It is a partially restored Roman copy (1st or 2nd century AD) of a lost Greek bronze original attributed to Leochares, 4th century BC, which is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum, in Paris.
Artemis is portrayed at the hunt, hastening forward, as if in pursuit of game. She looks toward the right and with her raised right arm is about to draw an arrow from her quiver. Her left arm has been restored, and a deer has been added at her feet. Her left hand is holding a small cylindrical fragment, which may be part of what was once a bow. She wears a short Dorian chiton, a himation around her waist, and sandals.
In ancient Greece many of the statues and architectural sculpture were colourfully painted in a way that is described as ''polychrome'' (deriving from the Greek words many and colour)? However, due to intensive weathering and other effects on the stone, the ''polychromy'' on Ancient Greek sculpture and architecture has substantially or totally faded, leading the scientists for centuries to believe that the statues were originally totally white.
