Athena is an ancient Greek goddess and one of the Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion. She is also known as Athena Parthenos (Athena the Virgin), Pallas Athena and by her roman name, Minerva. According to the Greek Mythology Athena was born from the forehead of her father Zeus. She was associated with wisdom, handicraft and warfare. Athena was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece, particularly the city of Athens, from which she most likely received her name.
The statue of Athena Promachos was discovered east of the Erechtheion in 1887. The armed and threatening goddess seems ready to strike her opponent with the now-lost spear she once held in her upraised hand. These statue belongs to a series of bronze works inspired by the sculptures of the east pediment of the Old Temple of Athena Polias as well as the goddess' depictions on Panathenaic amphorae.
