Greek ceramic plate depicting Hercules and Amazon

Handmade greek ceramic plate depicting the battle between Hercules and the Amazon Hippolyta

Handmade greek ceramic plate depicting the battle between Hercules and the Amazon Hippolyta. A lovely souvenir from Greece!

In Ancient Greek Mythology the Amazons were a tribe of warrior women believed to live in Asia Minor. They were the daughters of Ares and the nymph Harmonia and they were considered as brutal and aggressive, and their main concern in life was war.

The most famous among the Amazons were Penthesilea and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle, emblem of her dignity given to her by her father Ares, was the object of one of the labours of Heracles.

According to the myth, Hercules was sent to retrieve Hippoluta’s girdle for Admete, the daughter of King Eurystheus. Hippolyta was so impressed with Heracles that she gave him the girdle without argument, perhaps while visiting him on his ship. Hera, however appeared as one of the Amazons and spread a rumour among them that Heracles and his crew were abducting their queen, so the Amazons attacked the ship. In the fray that followed, Heracles slew Hippolyta, stripped her of the belt, fought off the attackers, and sailed away.
