Athena is an ancient Greek goddess and one of the Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion. She is also known as Athena Parthenos (Athena the Virgin), Pallas Athena and by her roman name, Minerva. According to the Greek Mythology Athena was born from the forehead of her father Zeus. She was associated with wisdom, handicraft and warfare. Athena was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece, particularly the city of Athens, from which she most likely received her name. She is usually portrayed in art wearing a helmet and holding a spear. The owls, the olive trees, the snakes and the Gorgoneion are Athena’s most prominent symbols.
The Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis is dedicated to her, along with numerous other temples and monuments.
In this representation Athena is portrayed in her military helmet and spear, looking down on a stele. Her posture indicates sadness or pensiveness. It has been suggested that the stele represents a grave marker or a memorial of Athenian soldiers who have died in the name of her city.
