Handmade doll dressed with the tradiotional greek costume of Tsolia, copy of an original greek folk attire, is a lovely souvenir from Greece.
Tsoliades or Evzones were several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, they are the members of the Presidential Guard, a ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Mansion in Athens.
Evzones are known for their distinctive uniform, which evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts who fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. Their uniform consists of a white cotton shirt, usually with long sleeves, a blue or red wool vest with golden cord embroidery, a fez (on their head) with a silk tassel and a knee-length fustanella of white cloth. The number of pleats of the fustanela is thought to be equal to the duration of Ottoman occupation i.e. 400. On the legs the Evzones ware tsarouchia with white wool leggings.
