Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love, beauty, pleasure, passion, procreation, beauty, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity and victory. She is also known by her roman name Venus. Her name derives from the Greek word aphrós (ἀφρός) sea-foam, interpreting the name as risen from the foam. According to Greek Mythology, Aphrodite was born in Paphos, on the island of Chyprus, when Cronus severed Unanus’s genitalia and threw them into the sea. The foam from Uranus’s genitals gave rise to Aphrodite. The goddess was married to Hephaestus, the god of fire blacksmiths and metalworking but as she was a very beautiful and desirable woman she was frequently unfaithful to him and had many lovers. Myrtles, roses, doves, sparrows, and swans are Aphrodite's most prominent symbols.

Aphrodite of Milos or Venus de Milo  is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture, made by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles between 130 and 100 BC. The original statue, which is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, is more than 2 meters high and it was discovered on 8 April 1820 by a peasant inside a buried niche within the ancient city ruins of Milos. The statue is missing a part of the one of the two arms as well as the original plinth on which it was displayed.

The beautiful goddess has inspired many artists across the ages. Aphrodite has been featured in art as a symbol of female beauty and has been depicted numerous times in sculptures, pottery and paintings.

In ancient Greece many of the statues and architectural sculpture were colourfully painted in a way that is described as ''polychrome'' (deriving from the Greek words many and colour)? However, due to intensive weathering and other effects on the stone, the ''polychromy'' on Ancient Greek sculpture and architecture has substantially or totally faded, leading the scientists for centuries to believe that the statues were originally totally white.
