In Greek mythology, Leda was a beautiful young woman, daughter of the Aetolian King Thestius. Zeus, the king of the gods of Mount Olympus, fell in love with Leda and in order to seduce her he took the form of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. The same night she layed with her husband, Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, and as a result of their consummation, Leda gave birth to two eggs from which hatched Helen (later known as Helen of Troy), Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux (also known as the Dioscuri).
This myth became very popular through the Middle Ages and it was a very common theme, with erotic overtones, during the Italian Renaissance.
