Cycladic female idol, alabaster cycladic statue

Handmade alabaster statue of a Cycladic statue represent female figures standing naked, with the arms folded below their chest.

Handmade alabaster statue of a Cycladic statue represent female figures standing naked, with the arms folded below their chest. This statue probably represents a great Mother Goddess, symbol of fertility and rejuvenation.

The ancient Cycladic culture flourished in the islands of the Aegean Sea from 3300 to 1100 BC. The Minoan, the Mycenaean and the Cycladic were the three major Aegean civilizations. Thus, the Cycladic art comprises one of the three main branches of Aegean art.

The best-known art of this period are the marble figures usually called idols or figurines. These marble figures are seen scattered around the Aegean, suggesting that these figures were popular amongst the people of Crete and mainland Greece. Considerable numbers of these are known, though unfortunately most were removed illicitly from their unrecorded archaeological context, which seems usually to be a burial. The most renowned type of artwork of the Cycladic culture is the marble figurine, most commonly a single full-length female figure with arms folded across the front.

Their clean simple lines and minimalism inspired many modern artists of the 20th century such as Modigliani, Picasso and Henry Moore.
