The Ionic order is one of the three orders of classical architecture, the others being Doric and Corinthian. It is easily recognizable by its columns, which are made of a base, a shaft, and the volute on top. In the Ionic order, the volute is shaped like scrolls or spirals.the west pediment of Parthenon.
This pediment depicts the mythical contest between Athena and Poseidon over patronage of the city of Athens. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, handicraft and warfare, won the battle and became the protectress of the city, which was named after her.
