Apollon is one of the Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion, son of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Apollon was associated with archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light and poetry. He was the most beautiful of the all gods and he was perceived as the ideal of the kouros (ephebe, or a beardless, athletic youth). The lyre is Apollon's most prominent symbol as he was the god of Mousike (art of Muses).
Many temples were dedicated to Apollo in Greece and the Greek colonies. The fisrt and most important of them was built in the 7th century B.C at Delphi, in central Greece.
The cylix of Apollo is a famous shallow bowl (kylix), work of an Attic workshop during the 5th century BC. The scene depicts Apollo with a laurel wreath on his head, sitting on a chair, the legs of which end up in lion's paws. The god is dressed in a white ankle-length chiton, over which a red himation (cloak) and sandals. On his left hand he holds a seven-stringed lyre, whereas with his right he pours a libation out of a shallow bowl decorated with patterns in relief.
The original cylix was found in a grave underneath the Archaeological Museum of Delphi at which it is currently on permanent display.
