Handmade greek alabaster statue of Poseidon with color and golden patina, greek god of the sea alabaster statue

Handmade greek alabaster statue of Poseidon with color and golden patina, the god of sea, holding his trident. A lovely decorative greek art gift.

Poseidon  was one of the Twelve Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman
religion. His Roman equivalent is Neptune. Poseidon was associated with the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses and was the protector of seafarers, and of many Hellenic cities and colonies. In Greek art Poseidon is usually portrayed on his chariot, that was pulled by a hippocampus or horses that could ride on the sea or dolphins, holding a three-pronged fish spears (tridents).

According to the Greek Mythology, Poseidon was the second son of the Titan Cronus and Gaia, brother of Zeus and Hades. After the defeat of his father, Cronus, the world, apart from the earth and Mount Olympus, was divided in his three sons: Zeus was given the sky, Hades the underworld and Poseidon the sea.

One of the most famous myths about Poseidon is that one of the mythical battle between him and Athena, the goddess of wisdom, over patronage of the city of Athens. Athena won the battle and became the protectress of the city, which was named after her. After the fight, Poseidon sent a monstrous flood to the Attic Plain, to punish the Athenians for not choosing him his trident.

In ancient Greece many of the statues and architectural sculpture were colourfully painted in a way that is described as ''polychrome'' (deriving from the Greek words many and colour)? However, due to intensive weathering and other effects on the stone, the ''polychromy'' on Ancient Greek sculpture and architecture has substantially or totally faded, leading the scientists for centuries to believe that the statues were originally totally white.
