Τhe meander or meandros (Greek: Μαίανδρος) is a decorative motif constructed from a continuous line, also known as the Greek fret or Greek key design. It was named after the river Meander in Asia Minor, a river with many twists, mentioned in Homer's Iliad. Meanders were common decorative elements in Greek and Roman art, appearing in many architectural friezes, in bands on the pottery of ancient Greece from the Geometric Period onwards.
It symbolises infinity, unity and the eternal flow of things. Meander was also used as a symbol of the unbreakable bond of friendship, love and devotion and that is the reason why it is usually offered as marriage gift.
