According to the Greek religion and Mythology, Zeus, also known as Jupiter, was the sky and thunder god, who ruled as king of all gods of the Mount Olympus.
Zeus was the child of Titan Cronus and Gaia, the youngest of his siblings, brother of Poseidon and Hades. After the defeat of his father, Cronus, the world, apart from the earth and Mount Olympus, was divided in his three sons: Zeus was given the sky, Hades the underworld and Poseidon the sea. The ancient Earth, Gaia, could not be claimed; she was left to all three, each according to their capabilities, which explains why Poseidon was the earth-shaker (the god of earthquakes) and Hades claimed the humans who died.

Traditionally, Zeus he is married to Hera, by whom he is usually said to have fathered Ares, Hebe, and Hephaestus. He is also famous for his erotic escapades, resulting in many divine and heroic offspring, such as Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Persephone, Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles,
Helen of Troy, Minos, and the Muses.

Zeus played a dominant role, presiding over the Greek Olympian pantheon and was regarded as an allfather who was chief of the gods. His most prominent symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull, and oak and he is usually portrayed by the ancient Greek artists in two poses: standing, striding forward with a thunderbolt leveled in his raised right hand, or seated in majesty.

Olympia in Peloponnese was the major center where all Greeks converged to pay honor to their chief god and where a temple in his honor was built in the fifth century. The temple housed the renowned chryselephantine  statue of Zeus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,  made by the sculptor Phidias. The Ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia in honor of Zeus from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.

In ancient Greece many of the statues and architectural sculpture were colourfully painted in a way that is described as ''polychrome'' (deriving from the Greek words many and colour)? However, due to intensive weathering and other effects on the stone, the ''polychromy'' on Ancient Greek sculpture and architecture has substantially or totally faded, leading the scientists for centuries to believe that the statues were originally totally white.
